چکیده

Bricks manufactured from dried sludge collected from an industrial wastewater treatment plant were investigated. Results of tests indicated that the sludge proportion and the firing temperature were the two key factors determining the brick quality. Increasing the sludge content results in a decrease of brick shrinkage, water absorption, and compressive strength. Results also showed that the brick weight loss on ignition was mainly attributed to the organic matter content in the sludge being burnt off during the firing process. With up to 20% sludge added to the bricks, the strength measured at temperatures 960 and 1000 8C met the requirements of the Chinese National Standards. Toxic characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) tests of brick also showed that the metal leaching level is low. The conditions for manufacturing good quality bricks is 10% sludge with 24% of moisture content prepared in the molded mixtures and fired at 880–960 8C. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Effects of Using Arsenic-Iron Sludge in Brick Making

Leaching of arsenic from brick manufactured from arsenic and iron sludge has been investigated in this study. TCLP result shows that leached metal concentrations are far below the regulated TCLP limits and the quantities of metal leached from sludge are less than those from dried sludge. The results of Atterberg limits tests of moulded sludge-clay mixtures indicated that both plastic index and ...

Reuse of Water Treatment Plant Sludge in Brick Manufacturing

A large quantity of sludge is generated each year from water treatment plants in Egypt. Disposing the sludge to the nearest water stream is the common practice in Egypt, which accumulatively rise the aluminum concentrations in water and consequently in human bodies. This practice has been linked to occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease. Landfill disposal of the sludge is impractical because of the ...

Bricks: an Excellent Building Material for Recycling Wastes – a Review

Brick is one of the most common masonry units as a building material due to its properties. Many attempts have been made to incorporate wastes into the production of bricks, for examples, rubber, limestone dust, wood sawdust, processed waste tea, fly ash, polystyrene and sludge. Recycling such wastes by incorporating them into building materials is a practical solution for pollution problem. Th...
